Re: Pep - ARF clone trooper helmet build

Bit of an update for you all, I've started assembling the card version of the helmet now after doing a quick test of the neck piece in paper for sizing. I take an L-XL motorbike helmet and needed to ensure this would fix myself and my two boys - both need a L sized helmet too.

I'm going to be adding some extra pieces to this build as I go through to fix/alter the helmet so I can have it do what I want it to do later on.

Currently I'm assembling the neck piece, as shown below, and are going to add an additional piece into the interior of the neck ring so that the entire piece becomes enclosed. My logic behind this is that one I've completed it I can cut out one or two sections, put some small holes in it and store battery packs in it to run fans, microphone etc. This way they are out of the way and encapsulated in their own area.
I'm finding working in card a lot better than the paper, obviously it's stronger for a start and I'm having to score the areas that fold, which is giving a nice clean angle. I didn't start scoring for a start which was a mistake, will be doing this from now on to ensure it assembles more simply and tightly.

Pretty much done with strengthening the interior of the neck ring. Apart from to tiny bits to do the rest of it is now enclosed and the entire neck ring is twice as strong as it was previous.
Bit fiddly to do but in the end worth the effort.

Next I will be making the nose and altering it as needed.

Thanks Matt, it's one of the upsides to being a shift worker I get plenty of time off to play with projects.

Right update time...

Started working on the nose/muzzle of the helmet this morning. This piece is quite tricky, as in there are a lot of pieces that are shaped to be folded at least three different ways.

Got the nose to fit nicely enough, any imperfections will be glossed over with resin/bog/fibreglass or what ever combo of strengthening I decide to use, as there's a couple of the tricky pieces that stuck together to quickly for me to get into a better position.

Below I've included a comparison shot of to pieces side by side, this is the piece that goes into the nose/muzzle of the helmet. The original piece was oddly shaped and didn't fit at all, so I made a custom piece that fits more accurately into the hole. Whilst I haven't gone screen accurate with the piece it's close enough and if I ever decide to go for a more accurate version it'd be easy to fix.
Next I need to add a few more pieces on the nose that aren't on this version but are on the animated helmet, good old greebles!

Anyway pictures below of today's progress;

Did some more on this last night and this morning. I've completed the visor and have done a test fit as you can see in the photos. I'm going to have to do some customization in order to get this to fit correct. There is a large gap between the top of the visor and the goggles which I need to fill in. Plus I'm also going to make the entire visor and dome removable for ease of access into the helmet.

Looking good Slyclone have you decided on how you're doing the next step? Polyester resin and bog?

Thanks for the comments guys. Yer I'm likely going with resin and bog coating then will take a mold of it.
Currently I still need to fit the visor and dome and I'm going to round the neck ring nicer too.
Also likely to add in some slots in the rear of the dome for a fan. But I won't be doing any of that until my next days off starting Sunday.
Plan is also to make a second smaller version of this helmet as its bloody large. Will take a comparison shot beside my stormie helm.

Small update: Visor and associated pieces are now fitted in place. Must say it was a total pain in the rectum to fit. Still need to make some glue tabs for the back side of the visor to hold it in place. Then it will be firmly in place and unfortunately not removable at this stage. Next build I will be making it 100% removable.

Started making some of the greebles for the helmet. These weren't a part of the actual pep file so are fabricating them as I go. Tricky to get them done as they're fiddly.
