Retro devaluing Original?

Post by AaroKin »

After chatting to a few sellers of vintage figures regarding the new retro line Im starting to think that my originals may lose a bit of value in the future (not that Id ever sell even one lol). Now I dont mean the bulk of my figures like Red Snaggletooth, Cloud Car Pilots, and Rancor Keepers but the more valued figures like Yakface, Blue Snaggletooth, Amanaman, and Pop-Up Saber R2.

If I'm some one looking to add a Yakface to my collection and am offered one for $300 how quick would I be to shell out that kind of money when I could get an almost identical and officially licenced figure for a tenth of that price....surely thats going to be a huge bargaining advantage for the buyer.

I know some are going to say 'people are always going to buy the original' but I'm not sure if thats going to stay the case....I, for one, would be happy with a retro line Yakface if it meant I had an extra $270 to spend on other figures.

Especially after guys like that Toy Toni and his 'MOC' figures whats to say the vintage figure you're buying is 100% vintage....at least with the retro line you know what you're getting I guess.

The difference between the Retro and Vintage figures is pretty minimal.....which is either a great or a bad thing lol

I was looking at completing my Retro-Collection set with the Tarkin figure but I couldn't bring myself to buy him....out of the retro line he just looks the most out of place (in my opinion) maybe because he has no vintage figure to compare with.

So I flagged the Retro Tarkin and purchased another POTF version from 1997.....to me he has a real 'Jedi' era feel to him because he's not all pumped up like the other figures that came out around the same time. I like the sculpt and detailing and to me just looks better than the new retro version (again, just my opinion lol)
