Slyclone's various builds thread

Post by SlyClone »

Hi all,

Been awhile since I've been around these parts and have finally gotten the time to get back into doing some work on my projects - finally have garage space!!

I've started a ARF Clone trooper helmet using the Pep method. Currently I'm building a test version in paper to see how much scaling it needs for myself and for the kids - they're begging for one each (4 kids).

Currently I'm a little bit over 3/4 of the way through it. I do intend in the end to make a mould of the pieces. Though I'm tempted to do it as a multi piece helmet in order to fit it together nicer.

Awesome. I've always thought this was one of the coolest clone designs from the animated range.

Thought much the same too. Plus the way the helmet is actually designed should allow for me to install fans and so forth in good locations through out the helmet. The neck collar will be a fantastic place for housing batteries and so forth out of the way. Plus a fan potentially in the 'peak' on the rear of the helmet.

Photo bomb inbound.

Bottom section and face of helmet is completed. Just need to reglue some areas.

Visor and top of helmet are still to be glued in place and a couple of smaller pieces too. Likely finish this tonight I'd say.

As for scaling of the helmet, I'm going to have to increase it by a minimum of 50% as right now it won't fit me and would only likely fit a 5 year old child.

Looking good! I've admired this helmet for quite a while - where did you score the file from?

Just re the scaling of the file, Pep Designer has the option to calculate the measurement between any two vertices, if you aren't already aware of that.

You'll be a Pep Ninja by the time you've finished!

I found it on the 405th website, creator offered it for free.

I wasn't aware of the option to calculate the measurement between any two vertices, but for now I've used the scale by 10% option and gone up 3x using that function, it's likely to be too large but I'm going to quickly assemble the neck ring to see if it fits over my big nut and go from there!

Thanks for that. I managed to get a copy.

Quite often I will use the measurement tool across the width, then compare it to the width of my head plus a couple of centimetres for clearance, then use the scale tool to adjust the width.

Depending on the style of pep, you can also just print and assemble the neck piece or hat-band part as a way of checking for size.

Right the test attempt is finished. Learnt a fair bit about this Pep for the helmet. Def isn't the best unwrap but it does allow me some freedom for the next stage, which is doing it in card and altering some pieces to better suit the assembly method.

Also learnt assembling it from the bottom up is the best idea. I've already assembled a scaled up paper version of the neck ring so I know my next version is the correct size.

I took the option of printing and assembling the neck piece to make sure it'd fit over my head or the kids. The test helmet I made in paper barely fits on the head of my 9 year old daughter. So I needed to make sure it would fit for myself and others.
