Another Tie Pilot Costume

Post by TIE1138 »

Hi all.
I thought I had better start posting some pics of the Tie Pilot Costume I am building. I had decided to do one that appeals to me and is "Personalized". I was going to post a link to my thread on the RPF, but decided to start one here.
So, without any further or do, here we go.
Got Blaxmyth to print off some Pepakura sheets of the X-Wing Helmet for me and cut everything out and glued together. This was the second attempt, as the first was too big. So he resized it and tweeked it a bit. After I had assembled the helmet, resin was then brushed onto the card to stiffen it and then fibreglass matt was put on the inside. Once it was dry, phil got his Trade Me purchase out and we compared the sizing. Amazingly, they were very close.

Glad you posted this, Nick.

This build is very impressive and I'm looking forward to seeing the rest of the pics. The finished helmet is really stunning!

Next, I applied a lot of Builders Fill to the helmet after sanding the shell to round off the sharp edges. This was then sanded and filled and sanded and.. well you get the drift, until it was all smooth. I then marked the centerline down the middle of the Mohawk and cut gently but not all the way through so I could still prime and sand to a smooth finish before parting the two halves and applying the spacer piece.

Next I added detail to the bottom of the mohawk. As you can see in one of the pics, the parting line is definitely visible, which is what I wanted.
I then cut the helmet down the middle. This made it easier to work on each side and add missing details. Blaxmyth popped in from time to time and had a look at what I was doing, and said he liked the sharp crisp edges. I was trying to replicate the round edges, but then realized that they only came about because the helmets in question were Vac Formed over a Master.
Next time you see a Vac Form piece, have a look inside (sharp detail) and on the outside (round detail). So, this is where my personal signature came in. Keep everything nice and sharp. You will see this with the chest plate.

Started applying the mohawk strip to both sides of the helmet halves gluing them with SS Epoxy Glue and screwing in place until dry. When it was all done, I put the faceplate in to see what it would look like. Ah, the plan, she is starting to come together.
