Well there's at least three R2 builders here on the boards, so don't hesitate to sing out if you decide to build one. ;)
Your collection is awesome by the way! Way to go!

I must say the R2 unit is great, i'd like to get one but my wife already thinks i've gone overboard and I haven't even got a complete star wars costume yet.
Doomsday and Armageddon got together and had a baby and man is it ugly.

That depends on how many of the parts you want to make yourself or get made locally. And how much you want to spend.
Also depends on what materials you want to make him out of/ are comfortable working with.

There are some people building pretty awesome styrene based droids now with resin details. Relatively cheap and light.

Then there's those that buy everything in aluminium as machined parts runs come up. Relatively expensive and heavy. ;)

Then there's those that make some parts, buy some parts, have some aluminium, some wood, some resin, some styrene.

I personally got some parts locally and some parts from overseas. Not much actual part making done by myself.
My droid currently has some Aluminium, some resin, and some styrene.

There's many different ways to make the same thing.

Check out a site called astromechdotnet if you get really interested. That's the best resource for R2builders(apart from personal help from a local builder:)

I'm more than happy to help out in any way I can too.

Cheers
