Trooping in Wanganui - pepped fibreglass costume

Post by Blaxmyth »

Hi all,

apologies for my lengthy absence from the boards, and thanks to Matt for resetting my password!

Phil here from Wanganui. I've been busy with some small troops here - some solo and some with a group - a Vader, Fett and another trooper - not a sandy, one of the Death Star shinys...

Most of my costume is pepped, with the exception of Oota's thigh pieces, belt and shoulder bells. The biceps and forearms are home-built vac forms and the helmet is a Cameron Oakley fibreglass. My outfit is not really accurate to the films, but is rather my interpretation of how I'd have built the sand troopers - solid and wide. More of a Gravel Trooper than a Sand Trooper. Plus I've lost 18 kg since building the torso, so it's probably bigger than I'd build if I did it again.

I've finally built a set of fibreglass shins which have a removable inner piece which is cable-tied together. It sits beautifully and self-corrects so it can't move round to the sides. The pics are of our recent outings, the last of which was a 10km troop from Waverley beach to the school - uphill for the last two k's! I've started on another set which I'll prepare to a smoother surface with recessed rivets, etc.

Thanks for looking, Phil

Thanks, Matt. Yeah, it was hard work - I was feeling all of my 61 years by the end!
